FICE Europe is pleased to highlight the release of a significant new statement by FICE International titled “Promoting Appropriate and Quality Alternative Care Options for Children and Youth.” This statement, which contributes meaningfully to the global dialogue on children’s rights and child and youth care, has been published in the International Journal of Child, Youth and Family Studies (2025, 16(2–3): 24–28).
In this statement, FICE International emphasizes the critical importance of developing high-quality, individualized alternative care solutions for children and young people who cannot (temporarily) grow up in their biological families. The organization calls on policymakers, professionals, and civil society actors around the world to invest in sustainable care models that ensure safety, stability, and developmental opportunities for every child.
Key points highlighted in the statement include:
The need for care options that are tailored to the unique needs of each child.
The importance of a well-trained, competent, and stable workforce.
Respect for cultural contexts and the meaningful participation of children and youth in decisions affecting their lives.
The promotion of family- and community-based care whenever possible.
This publication provides a strong foundation for continued dialogue within the international FICE network and supports the shared commitment to improving the living conditions and developmental outcomes of children and youth in alternative care settings.
The full statement is available through the International Journal of Child, Youth and Family Studies.
